Choate Hall & Stewart Perspective

The Choate Difference

Sophisticated law students ask what differentiates one firm from another - how is a firm different, how is it better, and how does it train and develop its attorneys? These are important questions.

Getting Hired

An Unusual Model

Choate has an increasingly unique and highly successful model: a focused, high-end practice in a collaborative environment, with everyone under one roof. The firm specializes in a core group of very successful, interesting practice areas, which permits us to practice at the top of the market, doing important work for blue chip clients. The model is great for clients and for the lawyers who practice at Choate. With everyone working under one roof, our attorneys are able to provide our clients with the highest level of service, teamwork, efficiency and accountability. For Choate attorneys, the model means that we know one another, our clients, and our summer associates very well.

Tips from the inside

Regional best

Choate Hall's hiring partners look for the usuals -- good grades, good schools, and that ethereal quality known as "fit" -- associates report. "Candidates from top ten schools stand best chance of being hired," advises a midlevel associate. "Those at lesser schools must have outstanding academics and relevant experience. Recruiting focus is on top ten law schools and other Boston/New England law schools regardless of whether in top ten nationally. Another midlevel associate adds, "The firm is looking for people who are good fits. All the other stuff is relevant and important, like school, grades, etc., but if your personality doesn't fit, they'll pass you up even if you've got great grades."

Should I go to Law School?
My time working at a law firm really hasn't convinced me that most of what lawyers do, especially at the more junior levels, really requires much intellectual creativity at all. So, the first part of my question is: how fair do you think this assessment is?This first question is really a subsidiary to the larger question I'm mulling over: should I go to law school?
